I bought the Zeiss Batis 18mm f/2.8.
I went for a small walk and made some shots. The light was harsh. I am not particularly impressed... or perhaps I was expecting to be as much impressed as when I got the 24 GM
Anyway, in this brief hour I missed the aperture ring...
More photographs to come.
Thank you for watching ! :)

Antonio, congratulations on your new lens!

It is funny that you bought this lens as when you posted the 2 photos of the seaside rocky beach last Friday in the 24 GM showcase thread, while I liked the photos they left me wanting to see more of the overall area. I almost left a comment saying you should get the Sony 20mm F1.8 G or the Batis 18mm F2.8. I think you should revisit that beach and take the new Batis, it might give you a better perspective of what it can do, as it is an excellent lens for these types of scenic landscape photos.

As you like to shoot primes like I do, it is tough to find what works best for each photographer when it comes to wider angle primes. I had the 24GM for a year but sold it :eek-30: as I wanted either wider perspective for landscapes, or a closer one for people photographs like my compact 35mm f2.8 ZA. Having 2 Batis telephoto lenses I just love, I looked at the Batis 18mm, but for me the 20mm f1.8G was the better choice as I want the fast f1.8 to use for astrophotography. If want to go wider, I will just take a quick 3 shot panorama in-camera with the 20G and stitch together later in post, as with the A7R III or IV there are so many MP, it is easy to do. So now, the new 35 f1.4 GM and the 20 f1.8G are my choices for my wider angle set and I am happy with the spacing and results. With you loving the 24GM so much, the 18mm Batis is a good spacing and choice, as you can see in the 1st photo of the building you posted above, the Batis is very sharp across the field and has great contrast and colors. But yes, the lack of a focus hold button and aperture ring may be something you have to come to terms with.

Thank you Jim for your comment ! :)
The way to the beach is pretty hard. No steps, just a long rocky path with small pebbles and rather sloped. We will not go there again.
However it is scheduled a visit to another beach nearby where the way is not that hard.
So to say, I am the leader of a small group of 10/12 who meet through Zoom and sometimes in the cafeteria in sunny afternoons.

When we were heading to that walk I had not the Batis. I hope to use it soon when we go again to see the beaches...
I think one must "be careful" with wide angles as they sometimes distort very much what is near us. It means it must be used with care and thoughtfully and that I think I can do.
I will be happy to show you some shots with the Batis 18 and most probably with the Sony 24GM which I will bring along.
What I found to be bad is the lack of pouch in this Batis lens !

Jim, the Sony 20G would have been an idea but perhaps it would be too "near" the 24... it doesn't mean however that I am not thinking of a 35 GM (GAS) which is as good or better than the 24GM

Yes Jim, I will overcome easily the lack of the button and the aperture ring.

Cheers ! :)

Thank you Tini for commenting !
That, changing all Sony lenses to Batis, I would never do. :)
Sony GM lenses are absolutely superb and have those buttons and aperture ring.
Oh well, they are all gorgeous pieces of organized glass inside tubes !
So far, I have few shots...

In fact one can see that the photos are cooler than those shot with the GMs
I post this one I made this morning just as an exercise and practice.

I shot this sculpture without any special care. However, I adjusted the WB in LR and made this square crop

Another very simple shot from this morning.
Now, I begin to like this lens... however, one has to be careful with the perspectives.
In the photo bellow I just wanted to shoot very near at max aperture. After some LR adjustments here it is.
But I must do something better than these clichés ... I will ! :)

I like how this lens renders. In fact I was interested in the Batis 18mm and 40mm lenses, but I opted for the Samyang 18mm f/2.8 and 35mm f/1.8 based on size, AF speed, mainly for travel and street use. Optically though, the Batis appears to render a bit nicer based on these samples.

Richard, very often I question the qualities of the lenses when I see it's photos on the web.
Sometimes in dpreview for example, one can get some raw files to see how the lens behave.
This time I have not. I read some reviews some tests about it and went ahead.
It is in fact a gorgeous piece of glass. As good as the GMs IMO
Note how little people see this thread compared to my other ones on GM's. Coincidence ? Not so long period ? Perhaps...

Thank you Richard for commenting !
Hope everything OK @ home !
Cheers ! :)

Really sharp images. I am not a great fan of UWA lenses but, I have a 14mm f/2.8 Samyang AF and have just received a Sony 10-18mm f/4 which I purchased used on eBay. I am going to test them head to head as soon as the darned heat dissipates... The Samyang is a super wide lens on a full frame camera and produces an equivalent 21mm focal length on a crop body. The 10-18mm Sony is, of course, an APSC lens but, I have read that it works decently on a full frame camera using 16-18mm...
