This lens kept popping up in those "best lens for..." lists. I wanted it for compressed landscapes. So I got one and on our first sunny day in March I rode out to the Klamath Wildlife Refuge to test it.

I got within about 50m of this Bald Eagle. Shot at f/8 300mm.

    Here's a 100% Crop

    Bald Eagle.

It also does a good dog portrait.

I expect that I'll be using this lens on a tripod most of the time, because focusing this thing, especially at 300mm, is a painstaking task. But I wanted to know whether I could shoot without any support, so all of these shots were handheld, without bracing against anything, and manually focused.

I also shot a bunch of tests against my SEL24240 and Canon LTM 135mm f/3.5. I won't bore you with the samples, but it spanked the 24-240 hard, and beat the LTM wide open before allowing it to pull even stopped down.

It really is as impressive as they say.

Very nice series, David. Thank you for firing up GAS :frown:, obviously the lens seems to deliver punchy pictures. These things run like € 500 on eBay here in Europe! :eek-30:

Well, it did put a little dent in my wallet. But considering they used to list for US$2,400 when they first came out...

Looking really good a real winner!:2thumbs:

Now all you have to do is keep repeating the phrase, "they used to list for US$2,400 when they first came out..." and I bet it will produce even better images. ;)

Great photos! I especially love how you filled the frame with the mountain in #5.

*sighs. Adds lens to EBay watch list*
