This is a touristy place in The Netherlands if ever there was one. And unlike many Japanese/Italian/American visitors we've never been there before, so now was the time because I wanted had to pick up a Minolta RF Rokkor 8/500mm in a village close-by. The Zaanse Schans is an industrial area from the 18th and 19th century, centered around mills as the machinery and accompanied by housing for the workers.

Beautiful shots, Ad. And I can see why tourists (with cameras) would flock to a place like that. But what's with the cygnets all holding their right legs in the air? Some kind of swan chorus line?

Why yes, indeed, didn't notice! And of course I have no clue. I think we have to ask @roundball@roundball to shed some light on this...

Thanks, Nick! I told my wife about you moving to our country and she said she just loves the white houses in Greece against a blue sky; also she still needs to visit a lot of ancient monuments in your country. So we might do a house swap, but before you say yes, you'll want to check some statistics on the Greek vs. Dutch climate :).

I'd like to say I knew the answer but I didn't have a clue either.
    However, I found the answer:

Is it normal for a swan to fold one of its legs up onto its back?
Yes. It’s like us crossing our legs, plus the large surface area of the foot is used for body temperature control like an elephant’s ear, absorbing heat from the sun when necessary.

Yeah, now I want to definitely visit as well. The Netherlands' tourist board should be paying you. ;)

Very nice Ad. Really like the composition in many of these shots. :2thumbs:
oh and the Swans are priceless. That scene looks scripted with them in formation, legs up on the lens side and going down the stream.
