The Yashinon DS line that superseded their DX lenses. Lost was the cool polished metal barrels that gave a salt and pepper look. Construction is pretty good, but downsized and some consider less robust than the DX body. The DS is M42 mount and requires an adapter with a flange. There is no A/M switch on mine. (But some early ones did.) The DS is single coated (the DS-M was the later mulit-coated version.) These DS 50mm came in f1.7, 1.9, and 2.0, they look identical, with the exception of the f/1.4 which is larger in diameter.

This f2 is supposedly NOT radioactive, like the f1.7. I think the f2 is decently sharp, and produces photos with very pleasing colors to (my) eye. I can't explain why, but I seem to enjoy the process of shooting with it more so than my other nifty fifties. (Zuiko 1.8, Konica 1.7, 52-f1.8, Rokkor X 1.7, S-Takumar 55-f1.8)

I have Yashica ML 50mm/2 and like it very much. I think that they are optically same (later having multicoating). Supposedly made by Tomioka who made Contax CY lenses too. DS-M is probably rarest of these lenses.

Btw, I have Yashica DSB 55mm/2 that I don't like at all.

Yes, DX --> DS --> DS-M --> ML, (and YUS). And released the DSB line as low-price offerings.
Research claims they were made by Tomioka, and Yashica eventually acquired the company near the end.

I like mine a lot too. Even though it's single coating, the results aren't hampered by it, as the photos show. I like it so much that I bought a DS f1.7 which supposedly is even sharper. It does have the Thorium glass though.

You should post your ML and DSB up to the Showcase. I don't see any entries for them, and there are so few Yashicas posted as is.

I have been too busy lately and weather has been really foul for a long time. I have ML 50mm/1.4, 50mm/2, DSB 55mm/2, ML 28mm/2.8 (and several others) waiting to be tested. I took a few pictures of my collegue with the 50mm/2.0 and it is really nice lens (so nice that I got another copy of it). Unfortunately ML 24mm/2.8 is pricey and ML 135mm/2.8 just average. Trying to pick up ML 35mm/2.8 cheaply but I have Contax 35mm/2.8 so I am waiting a cheap deal.
