I have the occasional need for a wider lens than a 24 / 27 length and I am more than happy to use fully manual lens with if needs be a adapter, but not knowing the Nikon or Cannon offerings ,as I came from Pentax, I have no idea what to look for. I have looked at the Samyang range but they are either for crop bodies or in the case of the 14 T3.1.the lens hood is fixed and you can't mount filters.
I have a Tammy 10-24 (pentax mount used with a adapter) but to avoid vignette it has to be used from 15 mm to 24 and the aperture closed down to I guess what is about about f8.
Anything more closed down also results in heavy vignettes.
    Suggestions any one ?

There is always the massive filter holder for the rokinon/samyang 14mm f2.8

I am assuming you want a UWA since you said wider than 24mm.

So Zony 16-35Z or the voigtlander 15mm 4.5 are both excellent! There are many samples here. Amin even did a comparison/review thread.

The Voigtlander 21mm f/1.8 has a great reputation.

And of course, if you want to splurge, the Loxia 21mm f/2.8 is getting rave reviews.

The legacy Olympus OM ultra wides are very good, too: 18mm f/3.5, 21mm f/2, 21mm f/3.5...

The CV 15mm f4.5 Version 3 (or, the new E mount when available) would be my recommendation.

If you want to go crazy wide, the Voigtlander 12mm f/5.6 is excellent, too. But it's takes practice.

I think I am correct in saying the hood is non removable on that lens which buggers fitting square filters?

You can't fit square filters on it, that is correct.
