Which supertele prime? The FE 400 or 600.

Over the years of bird shooting I'd come to the conclusion that 600mm was the price of admission and for BIF, longer was required.

When I considered getting a Sony t/p prime I faced the choice between these two lengths with TCs in the mix.

What worked against the 600 for me was that it was rather more expensive but more importantly significantly longer - and the length would get in the way of my mobile handheld shooting, when I clamber around boats and in and out of 4WDs. It's too long to carry on a chest harness and too long for carry-on luggage.

How would the 400 go with TCs? If OK, it would yield 3 focal lengths: 400/2.8, 1.4x TC = 560/4, 2x TC = 800/5.6. 400 makes close wildlife shooting possible and 800 is ideal for BIF while still being hand-holdable.

I found example shots on Flickr of the 400 and TC combinations and they are plenty sharp - https://www.flickr.com/photos/154088944@N03

So I opted for the 400 and It's worked out well. At 800mm the shutter speed has to be cranked up from my BIF default of 1/3000 to 1/4000 to counter camera movement and at times heat haze. It's a bit heavy for my Cotton Carrier Skout so for a day out the CC harness is better.

There's a member of Fred Miranda forum doing 3-D printed replacement hoods and caps for them. People want shorter hoods. I want an affordable replacement. https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1641188

I wish that Tamron or Sigma would come out with a prime lens in the area anywhere from 400mm to 600mm and with an f/4 aperture and the capability to add a 1.4x TC...

The new Sigma 100 to 400 will satisfy the enthusiasts.
Only pros and nuts shell out for primes.
They have to be very fast in their action to keep up with the A9.
And the materials and manufacturing tolerances of all those bits of glass are absolutely top spec.
Not to mention a carbon fibre sunhood that costs AUD 1000 😭
