Perhaps because there's no clear foliage (some of the background was seaweed which also reflects lots of IR.
It was shot through a 720nm filter causing the jacket to change tone drastically. To the unaided eye Mikes jacket is as black on the outside as it's lining is.
It's also why the camera has come out particularly dark.

Over the years I've taken quite a few IR shots that are not easily identified as such (particularly in monochrome). Buildings often look much the same as they would in standard B&W just having a bit more contrast. Cars also tend to look normal but these can show differences where plastic body panels sit next to metal ones (and also show bodywork repairs using filler)
In portraits the skin normally makes IR evident & that's certainly not obvious in the shot of Mike, so without any reference to how it looked visibly it's easy to see how you thought it was simple B&W.

I've been photographing Oberlin for 8 years. I have found this alley to be the most interesting thing in Oberlin.
This year, I decided to photograph it in Infrared. In 2013, there was a lady on the center steps, with a dog, taking a cigarette break.
The scene was super. Timing is everything.
