Was able to snap this as my wife and kids were at a pool party.

I may have been a bit insane with those photos

    50mm lens
    F/1.8
    ISO 100
    Shutter speed 1/4000

Camera was in Aperture priority, and it was so sunny out.....

Was a little disappointed w/ these, either missed focus slightly or insufficient shutter speed (1/640)? All at f2.8-3.5.

I like #3, cool capture, nice isolation.
I think the shutter speed was likely a tad slow. 1/1000th is my preferred setting for such motion.

I need to educate myself more on focus modes, I was on af-s I think. #5 was 1/1600 but focused behind him.

Well I kind of gave up on autofocus today. I tried af-c with center spot setting and still got poor results. Don't know why or what else to try (AF drive speed and AF Track Sens are set to normal?). Finally went to manual, focusing where I thought he'd be and got some keepers. Is it expecting too much for AF to get this right? (A7R2/24-70GM)

By chance did you do the newest update?
my initial thought is, no that shouldn't be asking too much at all!

Interesting, I know you said you tried different focus modes, what about tracking?

Edit: can't remember if a7r2 only has eye focus tracking or if it has object tracking as well, I've got the a7ii, after reading as much as i have about both cameras sometimes i forget which can do what. (sorry)

Best I can tell these are the only settings I can choose from:
    af-s (single focus)
    af-a (automatic af?)
af-c (continuous) Seems like the logical choice
    dmf
    mf

I do now see a "Center Lock-on AF" setting and "Smile/Face Detection". I'll have to try those...

I think you'll find these videos helpful. No reason AF in the daylight can't track a child.

Those are very helpful Chris. I knew of 'eye af' but didn't see it on the menu, it's set to a button now. I'm also going to try 'center lock-on af'.
