I have both the Sony 70-200mm f/4 E OSS lens and the Sony 85mm f/1.8 both of which I use for portraits... I am thinking about selling the Sony 70-200mm f/4 lens and replacing it with the Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 and wonder if the Tamron could replace both the Sony lenses for portraits and possibly for travel? What do you think?
I am pretty sure that the Tamron will replace the Sony 70-200mm. I "might" just sell the Sony 70-200mm, purchase the Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 and see if it will replace both lenses. If so, then I will sell the 85mm f/1.8 and if not, I keep the Sony 85mm and Tamron 70-180mm.
I don't really need the extra length of the Sony 70-200mm because I also have the APSC 70-350mm which is an equivalent 105-525mm lens on my crop sensor body.

I've had the 70-200/4, traded up to the 100-400, then traded up for the 200-600. I now have the 70-180 as well, and think you will find that the 70-180 replaces the 70-200/4 very well.

I also have the 85/1.8, and you won't get as narrow a DoF with the 70-180 in the 85mm range. You may not miss it, though. If you can back up and take the same shot with the 70-180 at the longer end, you should be fine. But if you often work in confined spaces, you may want to keep the 85.
