Noticed this adult Robin on top of a “perch tree” I have up…just standing there with its beak open. Would occasionally open or close its beak different amounts, occasionally turned its head in different directions. Kept thinking it would fly away any second. Finally decided I was witnessing something unique, went and got my camera, shot this.
Watched it 2-3 more minutes…finally stepped away to put the camera down, stepped back and it was gone. A very brief Google search didn’t turn up anything.

The only time I’ve seen birds stay out in hot sun with their beaks open is when they’re all fluffed out for the sun’s heat to drive lice out of their feathers, but not once did this Robin do any of that “fluffed out feathers” thing…just had its beak open.

So it's the equivalent to a dog panting.

Apparently so.....and I got some shots today of a bird using the birdbath and even while standing on the rim of the birdbath, they had their beaks open.
