So I just put this lens on the A7r II. I love the close focus and rendering it gets. I've been using it in crop mode. My question is do you think it's a waste? Am I loosing that much from 42-18 mega pixels if I don't print larger than 11x14? Am I wasting all the features of a full frame? Should I save up for the FE 35 1.4 instead? The size of this lens makes it very useful. The FE 35 is a giant compared to it. Any thoughts?

I think this is a very significant question. I am only beginning to wrap my head around it. It seems to me that we now have enough pixels that we, the photographers, get to decide how to "waste them" as one additional variable among our many choices. Every time we print smaller than our maximum print size and every time we only view on a screen, we are "wasting" pixels. I am currently leaning toward thinking that if cropping either in post processing or by using an APS-C lens gives us the image we want, then we make a good choice. Only in the recent years (or, for me, months) have we had this pixel abundance at our disposal to use as we choose. We almost always "waste" pixels.

You are getting more resolution than the same lens on an NEX-6 (18mp vs. 16mp). Not as much as on an A-6000 or my NEX-7 (18mp vs. 24mp). Some will say 18mp on aps-c is plenty.
The 35mm 1.4 will give you 42mp across the bigger frame and is also a stop faster. If will provide much thinner depth of field because of the wider aperture and it's over a larger sensor frame. I guess it comes down to have much you need/want that and how much you are willing to pay for it and deal with the bigger size.
I doubt it, as you are still using an APS-C sized sensor crop that has to be blown up more than a FF sensor for a given viewing or print size, so the noise is amplified.
