Hi Lucille, I think the more shallow DOF of the RX1 works better for this shot, but both look great.

For the subject the 3N shot is better because the whole car is in focus and you got those nice catchlight stars in there. For artistic effect overall the shallow DOF on the RX-1 is nicer. There's a bit more of the detail in the flake in the maroon paint in the RX-1 shot, but that may be nothing more than the angle of the shot.

I'd have to pick the 3N shot. The background blur in the RX-1 shot isn't strong enough for me to overcome the whole car being in focus in the 3N shot.

I personally think that the rx1 shot is better.... But 1800.00 better, I don't know.

With a better lens on the 3n you could have matched up the quality.

The 3n depth of field with the kit lens looks like a basic point and shoot to me.

I know Jim, that was my point. The comparison is already apples to oranges, why not make that apple at least orange in color? Lol

I'd like it better with a 28 on it. Maybe even 24, but that might be stretching it a bit though. Piggy bank empty? Mine ran away since it was facing starvation. lol!

    Lucille,

The rx1 seems to be an amazing camera...

How does it do in low light?
    Portraits?

    Thanks

Technically? Definitely the RX1 shot. It's much crisper, has a nicer color rendering (especially visible in the different red tones) and overall contrast seems better to me. No surprises here.

The RX-1 shot reminds me of an old 35mm film slide - in a good way.

The RX1 seems to have more potential for taking a better picture here. I agree with the previous poster that the contrast seems to be better on the RX1 as well.

If the subject would have been taken in the same angle and distance the RX1 would of been the best shot.

In this particular photo the Nex 3n took the better shot though.

I dislike the RX-1 shot BECAUSE the background is annoyingly soft,...other than this they are remarkably similar in 'on screen' quality. The kit lens was obviously at ver small aprture as evidenced by the 'star' highlights, so depth of field was considerable. If RX-1 had used the same/similar aperture then the difference would have been even less.

Large prints on the wall would have shown a very different result as the RX-1 should be capable of much larger reproduction since the sensor is TWICE the size.

    RX-1 shot is better IMHO

...but regardless I would personally opt for a Nex system all day long

    +1

A NEX-7 with 24mm Zeiss Sonnar should yield almost as good results as a RX1, while still giving you the flexibility of interchangeable lenses and now a great choice of Zeiss lenses.
