I have recently purchased the Sony 85mm f1.8 to use on my A7iii for portrait work and had the opportunity to try it out yesterday when we were in Bath celebrating my wife's 65th birthday.

It was an overcast day but we found a suitable area and I used some fill flash to lift her from the background.

The eye focus is amazing and never missed a beat locking on very quickly.

These are some of the photos:

Eye-AF is enough reason for any portrait shooter to get an A7/R III body! Great shots of your lovely wife!

Thanks Jonathan, I am lucky to have the A7iii+85mm f1.8 and even more so to have a wife that loves the camera and photographs well.

You are so right, the eye AF is incredible.

Nicely done, beautiful shots. I'm getting this lens as soon as I can, just have some saving to do first. Did you notice any CA issues?

Thank you all, I am very happy with this lens and Simon I have not noticed any CA issues with it. It really does a superb job wide open especially when used with eye AF.

Great shots of a very lovely lady. Happy birthday to your wife. The Sony 85mm f/1.8 and A7iii seems like a magical combination...
Right now I shoot with an A6500 and use either a Sony 50mm f/1.8 or an 85mm f/1.8 Canon lens adapted with a Sigma MC-11 for portraits. At f/1.8 with face detect, the Canon lens and A6500 nails focus on the eyes regularly. I am starting to sell off some Canon gear and an A7iii and 85mm Canon is on my future list.
I am also playing with some adapted lenses for portraits but, they are special purpose lenses like the 58mm f/2 Russia Helios and the 75mm f/1.7 Night Owl...

Thanks Richard, being a Nikon shooter for years and this being my first Sony, I am amazed at the performance of this combo and the quality of image it delivers - superb value for money in the full frame mirrorless family.

I bit the bullet and purchased a used, minty, Sony 85mm f/1.8 lens from Adorama and couldn't be happier... Since I don't need the MC-11 adapter with the native Sony lens, the package is a lot lighter. The AF is also improved with Eye AF in AFC; while the focus hold button (Which I reprogrammed for Eye AF) is absolutely wonderful! I can see that this might just very well become one of my favorite lenses...
