Was up near the local camera store today while out having lunch with my daughter. She didn't want to go there, but I always want to stop by to see if they had any used lenses. Talked her into going, and got lucky, they had a used 100-400, looking brand new, just missing the lens pouch.

Finally had a little warmer weather, and not so many clouds. 100% crop on the A7R3, hand held @ 400mm, 1/500 @ f/5.6, ISO 250:

Just received my 100-400 GM the day before and went out to the Salton Sea (Sono Bono NWR) to give it a try. Although I have had my Sony A73 for 14 months this is the first time in shooting wildlife photos with it. I set the AF to AF-C with Zone tracking and FPS to medium, following advice of others more experienced than me at this, and for photos with a clean background or sky, that worked pretty well. The first 2 photos are from a 25 shot sequence where I saw the 4 Snow geese flying far left, #1, towards the large group on the ground I was photographing. The Sony tracked all with perfect AF even when they were landing, #2.

But when a large group took off and flew directly towards me, the Sony missed all 10 photos, never getting focus. And if there was any brush in the foregound or background the zone AF got confused a bit, even with still subjects. The first 10 shots of 12 in this sequence of the (Reddish?) egret were all backfocused, so I switched to Flexible spot medium and used the joystick to track. Seems the egret was getting impatient with me fooling with the AF, and as soon as I got 2 photos in focus he took off. Overall a good learning experience for me but I think I am going to stay with flexible spot AF, as with the joystick I can move the AF point pretty quickly without having to deal with the front or back autofocusing I experienced with the zone mode.

Came back another day and got these photos of the cutest couple of Burrowing Owls. Very impressed with the sharpness of the lens and I have placed an order for the 1.4x TC to give me added reach.
