I was playing about in my backyard today taking macro shots.
Out of interest I tried the 70-300 at its closest focus, then put on a 16mm macro tube and then added a 10mm macro tube to compare.
I than put on the Sony 90mm Macro lens (with no tubes).
The 70-300 combos don't get anywhere near the magnification of the 90mm but give acceptable results with a reasonable dof, the 90mm can give much greater magnification and is a much better lens to use W.R.T ergonomics, manual focusing etc.
I used manual focus with peaking set to max with the camera on a monopole.

90mm no tubes closest focus (not completely focused I know but the size comparison is what I'm showing)

Looks pretty nice :) Those colors are very easy to blow out, but you handled them well.
