There are now five separate forest fires burning to our northwest, none of which is more than 7% contained, and the prevailing winds are blowing all the smoke from those fires right into the Rogue Valley. Looks like we're in for a long, hot, and smoky summer here in Oregon. I took the upper photo a couple of weeks ago, and the lower one this afternoon.

    Smoke.

    Welcome to Beijing, Oregon. :dispirited:

Close, close but you need more yellow in the sky for Beijing.

Well, the fires are all in unaccessible terrain, so the firefighters have to pretty much just stand by and let them burn. And now the weather muppets are telling us the the winds are shifting to make it even worse for us. My guess is that it'll be a decent shade of yellow by tomorrow morning.

But hey, this light is really photogenic. :p

We've had another bad summer of forest fires here in southern Oregon, with several still burning nearby. And when the winds come from the south, the valley is filled with thick smoke.

The largest of the nearby fires, which started on August 11, is only 30% contained and has burned more than 96,000 acres, with no end in sight. In the mean time, we're all two-packs-a-day smokers here.

The local fire agencies have crews and trucks on standby all over the area to try to keep any new fires from flaring up.

But we're in the midst of the worst drought in memory, and all of nearby reservoirs are pretty close to empty.

So it's likely to stay this way until the autumn rains finally come.

The setting sun looked just like that in the Columbia River Gorge last evening. Lots of smoke in the air the last several days. Hopefully they get the fires contained before they burn the whole forest down.
