This is a very touristic town that was loved by ex-pats because of its beaches, then the government allowed gambling and money from Asia came in building casinos everywhere. However, in the last year or so Cambodia outlawed gambling in its borders. Leaving the town full of half-finished constructions and abandoned resorts.

Such a eyesore on a pretty seaside town. I spent 5 minutes on Google maps counting the tower cranes in Sihanoukville and saw over a dozen of hi-rise unfinished projects. Such a blight, and unfortuntely it will most likely be like that for many, many years. I was involved in the Fontainebleau Casino and Hotel, a almost $2.5 Billion USD project in Las Vegas that shut down halfway completed 12 years ago during the 2008 recession. It still sits today partly finished with exposed part and pieces sticking out everywhere. 3 years ago it sold for $600 million to some investors who said they are trying to find another billion USD and finally try to open it. But the city at least required them to completely fence it off and provide security, something that is most likely not going to happen in Cambodia.

Are you continuing your travels and any plans to visit Thailand? My wife is Thai and we spend a lot of time there, and you are about 100km SE or so from 3 of the best islands in all of Thailand, Ko Kut, Ko Mak and Ko Chang. There are part of a group of about 14 island that are a National Park and stretch down to the Cambodian border, but offshore of course. Well worth an extended stay, even if you had to go thru quarenteene again and lots of fellow backpackers, very laid back in most areas. Most likely Amphoe Klong Yai 15km North of the border has ferries, but if not, just SW of Trat are 3 port cities with ferry's to them.

Please keep posting your photos Rob, it really helps me with maintaining my sanity awaiting my next trip to Thailand and SE Asia. Seems it will have to be after the first of next year though.

Hi, yeah, it is a bit of an eyesore, but part of a city that's been exposed to money and tourism. I have been to Thailand multiple times (Bangkok, Pattaya, Koh Sommet, and another city that escapes my mind. ) I don't know if I'll be going back to Thailand any time soon. I posted some photos here in the forum.
Thanks for the encouragement. It is always appreciated.
