I think I did everything I could to make this shot NOT come out at all.
Manual focus with an adapted 30+ year old macro lens, no image stabilization, hand held, 1/60th second, ISO 3200, through glass and no flash.
Its not great by any stretch, but it is serviceable.

Nice image Robert, I think I'm also being influenced by Dixie as she is practising one of my favourite hobbies :D

Very cute kitty, and impressive high ISO performance. There is no greater challenge for a sensor at high ISO than dark fur in low light.

This is one picture shot through 3 layers of glass (security windows, etc) with almost no light at all but just few lamps behind me. ISO 1600
Picture is SOOC

ISO 6400 sample

Camera was on table so that lower ISO values possible, but at the cost of slower shutter times.

This was f4 @1/40th

^ Wow, I've never gone beyond ISO3200 on the NEX, thinking that's the usable threshold - but my, my... ISO6400 is still decent!!

I wonder if Pete (the OP) ever did get a NEX in the end?

I guess 'high' ISO is all relative.

I don't know whether I'm more astonished that you photographed that tomato, or that I never thought of photographing a tomato! Super shot. If I can't think outside my box, then I need a bigger box to think in. Seeing pictures like this helps me to know there's a whole wide world out there :)

Oliver in dog bed beneath my desk. I shot this at ISO 51,200 using the Sony A7iii and Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 lens: 1/640 second at f/5.6. Global noise reduction in NIK Dfine-2 and a bit of selective brightening over eyes...

ILCE-7M3    E 28-75mm F2.8-2.8    59mm    f/5.6    1/640s    ISO 51200

Although I would never shoot a serious image at ISO 51,200, this one is surprisingly not that bad!

This one is at a ridiculous 204,800 using 1/3,200 at f/5.6

I am of an age when I first began photography the fastest Kodak film was Super-XX at an astounding ASA (= ISO) 125 :yahoo:

Actually, when I pushed Super-XX one stop to ASA 250 - the results were not much worse than the above :cautious:
