I went through stages of realizing, then working to better manage, my sharpening because I was overlooking edge issues / halos caused by unknowingly over-sharpening.
I normally don't bother with Lightroom for my jpegs but a lot of shooting wildlife is in early / late low light conditions with high ISO which often results in background noise.
Maybe that sharpening / masking approach will help on a noisy background even with a jpeg...thanks for posting.

My fairly basic software has sharpening and this helped explain how/what it is doing. Thanks for posting this Chris.

I stopped watching when he said he did not know what real effect the Radius slider had ;~/

I use these settings as starting points, FWIW

A R D M
Portraits 35 1.2 20 70
Fine Detail * 45 0.7 90 15
General 45 0.9 15 0
Landscape 45 0.8 50 10

* "fur and feathers" mostly
