Lately, I didn't have much time to go out and shoot. Oh, and the weather was pretty bad too ... So tonight, which was a quite cloud free night (but too bright for serious landscapes) I decided to do a self portrait once again. I always sucked at doing selfies. It's not just that I usually hate seeing myself on photos (my haircut always looks kinda strange ;( ), it's also that I'm not a portrait photog at all. But the thing I'm worst in is the thing that's easiest to improve on, right? So I tried again ...

    What do you think?

No stars where you live? Wow ... that must make you feel alone sometimes ...

Ya think Philly is bad, come to China. There's no moon here.

Nice self-portrait. A little cryptic, can't tell what kind of porn you are looking at from your smile. That's good.

Next time try it without the wig. :p

    Colin,

This must be the best post I've read in a long time.

Nice work, Poki. I like the fact that you capture both the room and the outside night sky. I guess you must have used a fairly long exposure and low light in the room?

The only problem as I see it is not the hair but the Mac. No, I don't hate Macs but it's huge and silvery and steals attention from everything else in the photo.

Perhaps try a new one where you flip the lid down and place your arms over it?

Yah, it's always hard to smile without looking stupid. Or to get the hair right. ;)

I added it there just for fun. The group seems to be inactive for years now, so even though it doesn't fit in perfectly, I think nobody'll complain.

I used the on-camera flash for the foreground, and a long exposure for the background. In fact, I stitched two photos together here. I also took one with a long shutter speed flash sync, but you won't get the face perfect in this case.

If I had one, I'd have done it using a flash positioned at my laptop to light me up, but not the lid of the notebook. But I don't own any off-camera flashes, so I had to live with this compromise.

The concept was showing me *working*, not making a cliche picture that just shows me sitting there, staring into the camera. I thought the symmetry and the color combination (red - green - blue) might work well, and I think I was right.

Poki, I really like the shot. It should't but knowing it's a composite makes it more interesting to me. Perhaps it's because I haven't a clue how to do that.

You've got a Mona Lisa thing going on with it too. Every time I click on the thread and and I see the pic, it's like you are watching me and from all angles.

    Thanks, I like retro. :)

Wow, thank you. Luckily I got a good angle there looking at the laptop screen.

As for the composite - it's a pretty simple one with only two layers (well, if you don't count the curtain backlighting which was the most difficult part here, and other small color correcting layers).

You drink Budweiser in Austria ? Isn't it like having a steak in a Hindu temple ?

What? We are the country with the second highest beer consumption per person in Europe (right after the Czech Republic). ;)

Oh, and yep, Budweiser always is one of the best.

This was supposed to say "steak" not stake... Having a phone spelling moment there.

I always thought Bud was kind of a mass produced pee. May be they make different brews for Europe.

Really? I think it's one of the better beers - at least from these that are easily available in supermarkets here. And in Prague quite a few people didn't like the Bud from the US, so I guess there's an actual difference.

Having had both, there's simply no comparison between our swill and the original from the Czech Republic. I wouldn't even call ours "beer."
