I've wanted a usable pancake lens for a long time. The Sony 16-50 is useless to me, so I had to wait. I was hoping that Sony would develop a good 24mm pancake lens, or possibly a 35mm pancake lens. It hasn't happened and I haven't heard about any future developments.

The pancake lens appeals to me because of its size and weight (or lack of). I've followed the Samyang 35/2.8 for a while. I have yet to read a bad review (other than inconsistent copies when it first came out). For $267 I wasn't expecting a professional level lens and the Samyang is definitely not in the class of a Zeiss. But it is a huge bang for the buck. All the reviews said that it was a lens that was comparable to other 35's that cost 3 or 4 times as much. That's quite a claim and it certainly piqued my interests.

While the professional reviewers know a great deal more about photography than I do, I am somewhat leery of their motives when reviewing products from multi-billion dollar companies. I'm not saying that their reviews are intentionally skewed.... I just said that I'm leery. Actually, I would encourage you to seek out all the reviews you can prior to spending your hard-earned money.

So, without further ado, you can make your own judgments as to whether this lens is a good addition to your kit.

These look really, really good and for the price is a great addition to your kit.

PS I had no idea that Anhingas were so cooperative that you could walk up to them with a 35mm!

Nice group of photos - looks like a pretty good lens. I really like the 12mm f/2.0 Rokinon for my APSC Sony cameras...
I don't need a 35mm f/2.8 lens because that focal length is covered pretty well by my 28-35mm f/2.8 Tamron. However, if I did not have the 28-75mm, I would be taking a pretty good look at this lens and also the three Tamron f/2.8 primes coming out right about now at $349 USD...

The more I use this lens, the more it impresses me. For $259, it is a great buy.
