From some of the reports of interviews with Sony execs and reps at recent trade shows, it sounds like they are continuing to focus on enticing "pros" to the system, particularly portrait, wedding, sports, and photo-journalists. For these, especially the latter two, long reach is desirable. So something beyond 300 makes sense, particularly for sports and wildlife.

It would certainly fill a gap in the lineup of lenses. Sometimes you just gotta have that extra reach.

Sometimes you're just lazy, too. Speaking only for myself.

I like the idea of 100-400mm lens; but I like Bill's idea better!

100-400 fe it is good news...a lot of people have the a mount 70-400 & la-ae 3/4 or the canon 100-400. A native lens of that zoom reach, is a positive step forward.
Oh and price not to be what 70-200 f2.8 selling.

I was eyeing off the 70-200 GM (and teleconverters) for bird photography but this might be a better option.

It seems to be a great lens, I suspect the IQ will be excellent and hopefully the AF etc too.
Some folk may say its too slow (f4.5-5.6) but that keeps the size, weight and cost down and with modern cameras particularly the likes of the A6300, 6500, A7R2 and now the A9 using higher ISO to compensate isn't such a problem. The dof with telephotos is always an issue anyway and fast lenses just make the dof all that more shallow.

With the pricing of 100-400 i would rather get 70-200 2.8 and 2x tc.
