The Apache Trail, that is. Couple weeks ago I spent a Sunday afternoon traversing the Apache Trail, in the Tonto National Forest. The goal was to endure the wash-boarded dirt road to its end at Roosevelt Lake, created by the Roosevelt Dam erected in the early 1900s.
By the time I got to my destination, the Sun had already set. So I shot what could with the remaining light and settled down for the night sky to do some long exposures. It started off warm in the mid 70s F, but the temps drop a good 30 degrees at night in the desert. With the wind picking it was very brisk and was glad to packed a winter coat. It is a very desolate and dark spot. A bit unnerving given the folklore and Native American legends regarding the area. But I was having too good a time to give it much thought!

    I shot the trip with a Sigma 30mm f/2.8 Art, and a pair of Rokinon/Samyangs...a 14mm f/2.8 UWA, and 12mm f/2.8 Fish-eye.

Getting there is part of the challenge or adventure, depending on one's idea of fun. Some of the landscape encountered on the Trail.

A pickup truck ahead, working his way along the 10% grade cliff descent into Fish Creek Canyon. We're spaced apart enough to allow oncoming vehicles to pass at widened sections of the trail.

Once reaching the bottom, and crossed to the other side, a ride along steep walls before the Trail gains elevation and plunges back down to the river valley before the dam.

Sun was now setting as we pass Apache Lake, one of the artificial holding lakes created by the damming of the Salt River.

Upon arriving at the dam, the front side and top was no longer accessible by the public. :-(
The light was fading but I got a pano snapshot of the backside at least.

The Roosevelt Dam, created the likewise named lake and the arch span is called Roosevelt Bridge. I got in a few Blue Hour shots of it and the dam, with the Rokinon 14mm f/2.8.

After the Moon had set, it was appropriately dark! A lone car broke the silence and managed to light up the decking of the bridge for me!

The sky was abundant with stars out here! And I could faintly make out the Milky Way. First time I've managed to get a notable image of it. A shot towards the northern sky, and one behind the bridge....

And one last one overhead. A lot of stars! But still too much light pollution from the city even out here.

I passed a visitor's area for a scenic view at the front of the dam. So I ventured back there in the dark for this finale....

It was cold and 10pm by now, and I had a long drive home. Time to call it a day.

    Nicely done!
When I traveled thru AZ on my way to KC Mo this past summer, I would try to think what it would be like if I were on horseback, living in the 1800's and this was the wild west.
What would it be like to not have traveled through this territory in a day, but if it'd taken a week or so?
That is some really rugged country you have out there and you've captured it perfectly IMO, Will.
    Thanks for sharing with us.

Thank you guys! I'm glad everybody found the trip as interesting and enjoyed the capture efforts, as much as I did. It's a popular attraction out here and I can see why. You can spend many hours (if not days) at some spots and get a variety of images. I kept saying to myself "I need to check out that location." Definitely returning before it's too hot.

Thanks Nino! The wide angle of the dam is probably my favorite from that night.

You are more than welcome Will. I have that Sigma 30 f2.8 and love it. The "rattle" worried me a bit at first.:crying:

Oh yes! The linear motor design had every buyer of these Art lenses concerned! Me too. I shot all of the daylight photos with the 30mm because I wanted a truer eyeball's field of view of the landscape. Feel free to check out the album of the trip on flickr. Lot's more from the Sigma 30 in there.
