Red Shouldered Hawk at 30 feet…3rd time (that I’ve seen it) sitting in amongst my backyard bird feeders looking for another bird lunch. Had the Canon FDn 400/4.5 on the camera and it was so close I couldn’t quite get it all in view, had to switch to the 300mm real quick. Got a handful of good shots from the window sill. Beautiful. I missed an excellent opportunity to capture one in flight yesterday. I was hiking, and suddenly realized there was one circling low over a ravine to my left. I tried to creep a bit closer, fumbling with my lens cap as I went. It apparently spotted me, because it suddenly stopped circling, and without flapping a wing, significantly increased its speed in a straight line away from me and was gone. Tony
