Great Photos! How do you get such great macro shots using the SEL 55-210?

    Thanks!

All but the butterfly and the first dragonfly were taken with the Cosina 100mm. I didn't really do anything special with the SEL 55-210 shots other than look for nice compositions. I used full zoom. Aperture was wide open for the butterfly shot to get as much separation from the background as possible. (Yeah that's right, the 55-210 can do well wide open at full zoom if you get a good copy) The dragonfly was closer and I needed a bit more DOF, so I shot at f8.

Really beautiful shots sleekdigital. I think you should repost that first dragonfly shot in the SEL 55-210 sample page so that others can see what you can be done with the lens.

I don't know what's this, but it looks like a tiny baby elephant with too many legs. Cutie.

Do you use a tripod or monopod? Do you live in the rainforest? Are you invisible? Do you yourself have six legs?

LOL! It's a plant hopper nymph. The thing is the opposite of an elephant in terms of size. It's probably only 3 or 4mm long. I had to stack up all my magnification gear to get this shot.

Ha ha! No to all of the above, I'm sorry to say. I know stabilization is useful for this type of work, but I'm not sure I could manage it. Even handheld, it's hard enough getting into position without scaring the critters away. A tripod would make it even more difficult unless you can find sleepy critters in the morning. I'm not a morning person, so I have to make sure I use a fast shutter speed. I use flash fairly often.

I don't live in a rain forest, but Pennsylvania does have lots of trees :)

What type of flash do you use?
I tried to no avail to match your skill.

    90mm macro sigma.

Cool fly shot. The background looks almost like watercolor, neat!

I use a Sunpak 383 mounted directly on the shoe and a cheap, simple diffuser...
Interfit STR111 Small On Camera Diffuser STR111

That thing is the secret to success, so don't tell anyone :)

When I want to go extra lightweight, I use a Sunpak PF20XD instead of the 383. The 383 is a beast, too big and heavy for the Nex. The PF20XD is ok, but I miss the swivel and extra power with fast recycle. If anyone knows of a nice small manual flash, please let me know. Still looking for a better solution there.

Very nice, the muted backgrounds keep the viewers eye on the subject.
