Just curious, did the people in the picture notice you? And if so, were they OK with being photographed? To me it seems they won't be too happy with their circumstances and I personally am very weary of photographing people that are obviously much less well off than I am. Not meant as criticism, just curious.

No problem. Yes, they were aware I was there(I was kneeling just a few feet in front of them) and I engaged them in conversation.

Their names are Paul and Josie. They live in a high rise apartment across the street, where they are not allowed to smoke, even in their own unit...so they found this little alcove to get out of the cold(it was 26 degrees F, with quite a strong wind) and have their smoke.

No problem. Yes, they were aware I was there(I was kneeling just a few feet in front of them) and I engaged them in conversation.

Their names are Paul and Josie. They live in a high rise apartment across the street, where they are not allowed to smoke, even in their own unit...so they found this little alcove to get out of the cold(it was 26 degrees F, with quite a strong wind) and have their smoke.

It never ceases to surprise me what people will go through to smoke.
But it did make for a great street portrait!

I love B&W in general, but in this case I like the original color one a bit better, as well as the original pose in both the B&W and color version. The B&W one would have been perfectly fine with me, had I not seen the color one; it's about the people here IMHO and the desolation (I see) in their faces really makes an impression on me.
