When I was in Italy 2 years ago, I wish I'd known about HDR. There were shots inside cathedrals that I couldn't really get without using it. Of course, when I came back and got very involved in photography, I started running everything through Photomatix, even stuff that didn't really need it. Now I take brackets, but only HDR them if I think it would improve the photo, or make it look more like what I actually saw. It's a learning process.

I do sometimes wonder if the vivid colors I see are the same as what others see; but I'm getting better at matching my eye to my camera.

Ted it looks like you started the thread with a subtle teaser. IMO these have gone to another place. These appear to not focus on increasing DR. They lean to artistic style and presentation. Definitely not my speed. Even so, photography is also about creativity, and in this use of HDR, that comes into play.

Exactly. I'm not trying to meet any one individual's criteria. I process according to how I like it. I see many photos that are "not my speed" but I don't feel the need to express my personal preferences toward their work. If they don't fit your speed, simply pass them over.

We're on the same page Ted. It's just my initial post said one thing and I was just providing some contrast for clarity and discussion. I don't buy into my way or the highway either. Keep doing your thing. hope I wasn't confusing.

The 6th Street Bridge, better known as "The Caveman Bridge," over the Rogue River at Grants Pass. It was built by the WPA in the early 1930s and is one of the many landmark steel-and-concrete bridges in Oregon built by that agency. Many fabulous WPA bridges can be seen along the famous Pacific Highway, route 101, in Oregon, Washington, and northern California. This one will soon receive a major cleaning by ODOT (Oregon Dept. of Transportation.)

I know HDR is sometimes like a curse word, but I always feel that if used simply to increase dynamic range, it's just another tool at the photographers disposal. These are actually really nice Ted.

I would say about 80% of what I sell or have hanging in galleries is HDR, I almost never use it for color saturation, rather, it is my "digital zone system" to increase tonal range.

Here is an example of how I use it, downsized instagram use image, any color enhancement was done in the HSL panel of LRCC I used HDR to hold detail in shadow

Thank you for your kind words. This was more worked than is usual for me. But, the shed was so dark and the light outside so bright, there was no alternative. And, I wanted to capture the clipper drives at the tops of the doors. At this level, photographers know HDR when they see it. It's important to me that process not detract unnecessarily from the impression of the image.

I really enjoy seeing, however, seriously tone-mapped, Trey Ratcliff style images, but I'm not interested in creating them. I'd like to think that in most of my HDRs even most photographers would have to guess.

I took a break from “serious”photography for a while, but am back to it.
I ignored the in-camera HDR capability of my NEX-6 until recently. In this scene, strong shadows of the evening light seemed to demand HDR. I set the camera to HDR +/- 6 EV to bring out all the detail. It provides a slight watercolor effect that I think works well without becoming too unnatural. It captures what I saw, or at least what I wanted to see..
