The amazing dynamic range of the human visual system is a basic challenge for us photographers who are trying to communicate what we see. I applaud the judicious use of HDR and any other tool that enables us to meet that challenge. I agree with Gary: good job Ted!

I know HDR is sometimes like a curse word, but I always feel that if used simply to increase dynamic range, it's just another tool at the photographers disposal. These are actually really nice Ted.

I believe just about everyone that discovers HDR tends to over do it at first. It's the wonderment of the colors and entirely different look. With time, we all calm down and begin to use HDR more judicially. As you said, it's just a tool, and the user has the freedom to use it to their personal tastes.

Definitely a personal preference. I am usually amazed at Ted's ability to process his shots. The first set above are perfect, IMO. The people shots in Zurich have started to cross that threshold for me. Maybe if there weren't people in them, I would like them more, but the odd flesh tones (Not necessarily cartoons, but maybe getting there) throw me off.

I think the two favorite of mine have been posted on the forum before, but I will add them to this thread, as it's a great topic for discussion.

As for subtle vs not, I think the first of the next two is subtle, while the second has started to cross that line. My daughter refers to them as "crispy", which can also happen when you have over sharpened.

Yep. People complextions make it a little tougher. The only excuse I have is that they are sized at 4X6 for album use. Posting on E-mount is not as forgiving.

Nowadays, I find the DR of the a7rii is so good that I don't need to shoot for HDR.
I still bracket but prefer to use luminosity masks to produce a natural looking image with a whole range of light and shade.
I ran 3 exposures through LR CC "Merge to HDR" and was quite pleased with the result

These all, well most of my concert shots always have a little hdr effect.
