This is a Water Strider. I didn't know it was a Water Strider until after I took the photo, got home, downloaded it to my computer and googlywooglyed "bug that walks on water". Up until then I always called them water bugs. They use the hair on their legs and air to float on the surface, apparently. Scientists are studying their legs to develop better waterproofing stuff, apparently. The moral of the story is Photography is a perpetual education in things you probably never need to know but are glad you found out. Now, when a cute chic passes me on the boardwalk and asks. "Hey, what kind of bug is that floating on the water?" I can confidently reply, "Well, that there is a Water Strider." How could she not be impressed?
