We had some thunderstorms rumble though here in the last couple of days, which brought some welcome showers (along with some unwelcome lightning strikes in the hills above us). But along with the showers came some fierce winds which toppled one of the majestic old maples in Lithia Park. Here's an old shot from my NEX-6, taken back in 2013:

I'd really expect a tree that big to have more of a supporting root structure to it.

It could be the main root broke. I have long understood maples to be a relatively weak tree and susceptible to damage by wind storms and the like.
