I finally gave in and decided that in order to bring my post processing to the next level, I "need" PS & LR. iPhoto and Picasa are great for snap shots but just don't get it anything more serious. I've spent the better part of 3 days watching the tutorials and practicing what they're saying. It's a huge learning curve from the programs I've been using.

Any raw editor (I take it you shoot raw now) has a fairly steep learning curve compared to Picasa and such. After some time you'll reap the rewards, your pictures start to look really better.

Be sure to watch tutorials about how to organize your files before importing them into Lightroom. Tim Grey has some very good tutorials on that subject; they're lenghty (almost 2 hours) and his humour isn't to everyone's taste (not mine anyway) but they're worth it. I've used Lightroom for 8 years now and I can't find fault with his explanations.

TL;DR
watch this video of Tim Grey.
