Nice, I see what you mean. Is this M42 screw mount?

Yup. It came off my late mothers old Praktica. This, the Carl Zeiss 50mm Pancolar 1.8 and the Carl Zeiss Tessar 50mm 2.8 were pretty much the standard lenses out of East Germany during the late 1960's > early 1980's.
Its based on a Meyer-Optik Görlitz Oreston 1.8 50mm from the 1960's (Pentacon bought Meyer-Optik)

Like I said though, it's not the sharpest lens. If you want tack-sharp, then go for the Pancolar 50mm. But regardless, I like it. And you can pick it up for next-to-nix.

It reminds me a bit of my M42 55mm F1.8 Takumar (Pentax) in the way it renders. Similar optical design I think.

It's not lacking for character :)

A lot of (especially early) Pentax lens designs were based/copied from Germany.
