Camera OR lens........... I know that "both" is the proper answer, but if it was one or the other, which is more important? I did some night shooting last night, and I'm not really happy with the results.

    A7II with Sony 24-70
    Tripod and remote
    f5.6
    ISO 200
    Manual focus

IMHO, lens. A fast, sharp to the edges, lens will provide more shooting options. (ie. hand-held and action)
Regardless of which camera body, I think ISO will be held on the low end for lowest noise. It's usually a long exposure, so that levels the playing field of bodies.

I reference Alex's results with an a6000 body. His low light/night shots are awesome.

Did you disable IBIS? Since it's on a tripod, it'll take out the little bit of hunting hysteresis of the IS.

Thanks for the reply. I did FORGET to disable IBIS.

There's no way around it, as your very underexposed photo exactly illustrates: you NEED to use longer exposures ;)
IBIS off, camera on a tripod, ISO100, higher f-stop number so more would be in focus and slow shutter speed

Alex's night photos that were mentioned here, are long (and sometimes multiple) exposures

Out of curiosity: on that photo how was your exposure metering? It should have given you a very underexposed indication, so that would have to make you think to alter the exposure triangle

Shutter speed is the important parameter ;)

Actually, I bracketed at +/-2 and that shot was the -2.

Do you remember what shutter speed?
-2 with f/5.6 (and ISO200) where if you had f/8 or more (and ISO 100) would have been even more underexposed

This is the +/- 0 middle shot. Exposure time 2 seconds

I really hate the color distortion in the sky.

So much to learn, and I've probably only got another 20 good years left (you know, like remembering my name).

Stopping down to f/8 or f/11 should reduce that light pollution bleeding into the sky. You'll have to experiment to find the right shutter speed though.
