I recently passed my birthday, my wife as perhaps an enabler allowed me to pick this up. Should be here next week.

Now to figure out if I need a new tripod to hold the Ivan Drago of Russian lenses. image.

Um, perhaps you could let the rest of us know what lens that is. I have no clue. :hmmm:

    It's an MTO100A lens
    1100mm @ f/10.5

Basically someone in the USSR took a telescope and shoved a camera mount on it.

    Yoohoo! That's a NICE lens!

A slung gimbal mount onto a decently sized tripod will handle it. My lighter Rubinar 1000mm is a PITA to aim on top of a large ball mount. Also focusing is a PITA because of vibration. Your MTO should be longer and heavier.

    Happy birthday!

I was actually thinking about throwing it on something like a Manfrotto video head

That should work well, since you can adjust the mount to get the center of gravity over the pivot. That long handle will make aiming easier.

Wow, I'd be scared to mount that lens on my camera due to its size/weight!!!

You could almost miss out the camera on that... It dwarfs it by a huge margin

It's much bigger than I thought it would be, looking forward to seeing pics from it.

Rightly so. I'm sure it must be the other way around, you mount the camera on the lens which must have its own tripod foot. With my NEX-6 on a tripod I didn't mount anything over a few 100 grams on it, dreading the flimsy tripod mount would break. When my NEX-6 breaks down I might try and see what happens just for the fun of it.

Now you understand why I recommended a gimbal mount. :D
