All,

I have this Minolta MD W ROKKOR-X 28mm f2.8 on my NEX-6 and am loving it. However, I am looking for a lens with a little more reach. Preferably a zoom. I am looking for quality and not necessarily reach. Your recommendations are appreciated.

If quality is what you're after, the Minolta MD Rokkor 35-70mm f/3.5 has a very strong following and excellent rep. Rivals the best in class. Because of that, it's pricey.
For a little more reach, I was very impressed with the optical quality of their 50-135mm f/3.5 "one-touch" zoom. Rendered very well at both ends of the range.

A highly recommended alternative to the Rokkor 35-70mm f/3.5 that could be found for a lower price, is the Tamron SP 01A, 35-80mm f/2.8-3.8.
It was nicknamed "the Zoom that thinks it's a Prime." Some considered it best of breed and was the reference standard for standard zooms.

It is an Adaptall-2 mount, which means it came available with a Minolta MD mount. (but Sony E-mount adapters are so dirt cheap, that shouldn't limit you. Even a Fotasy Adaptall-2 to E-mount adapter is affordable and allows all Tamron Adaptall-2 lenses to be used.)

If you want a bit of a longer zoom the 70-150mm is quite lovely: No metering lenses on Nikon DSLRs It is a Vivitar, but has an MD mount.

UPDATE

I was able to find and purchase a Tamron SP 01A, 35-80mm f/2.8-3.8 lens that is in excellent condition. This lens is an engineering marvel. The folks at Tamron did their homework. Thanks much to @WNG for the recommendation.

I came across the Minolta 35-70 3.5 yesterday very cheap, yay. Never tried a Minolta lens before or back in the day, camera. Apparently there's also a macro version, which this one isn't, the mfd is not a strong point.

I don't have much experience of zooms, but the way it's at its shortest at 70 and its longest at 35 seems atypical. And at last I've found an acceptably-sized good quality zoom to go about with that I've not had since the m43 Oly 12-40/2.8.
