Just arrived in the mail today. Nice sunny afternoon for trying out the lens. Not bad, I say.

Thanks Jim. It is small compared to my other lenses. I just posted a pic of it on the camera.

Nice pics, as usual! In all its simplicity the first one is my favorite. Do you know already when you will pick this one over another 50mm? I guess you won't be taking both a 50mm and a 58mm on an outing? Just curious, I think I'd prefer 58mm over 50mm.

Thanks guys. I haven't thought that far ahead, Ad. I doubt I'd take the 50mm and 58mm at the same time, but I usually decide which lenses I'm going to take with me on the spur of the moment, based on what type of pics I'm thinking I might take that outing. I do know this one is going with me on my next trip into the forest.

The background is cluttered, but looking out my window, I couldn't ignore the way the afternoon light was playing off the leaves of the Red Maple in front and Callery Pear in the back.

    Pretty narrow DOF at f/1.4:

True, but the OOF areas are sweet. :)

Hey all, here's a few samples. Home for winter break so lots of dog pics heh :)

    Wide open:

    <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/klweng/15870069186" title="All Smiles on Thanksgiving. by Kevin, on Flickr"> 15870069186_b1b886f323_b. "1024" height="680" alt="All Smiles on Thanksgiving."></a>

    <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/klweng/15870751828" title="Winter Morning. by Kevin, on Flickr"> 15870751828_3266195416_b. "1024" height="680" alt="Winter Morning."></a>

    F2:

    <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/klweng/15896691827" title="Filmic Lulu. by Kevin, on Flickr"> 15896691827_36ff47721a_b. "1024" height="439" alt="Filmic Lulu."></a>

    <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/klweng/15460147334" title="Filmic Mimi. by Kevin, on Flickr"> 15460147334_74313c4c60_b. "1024" height="439" alt="Filmic Mimi."></a>

    F4 I believe:

    <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/klweng/15896087598" title="Can we go out there?! by Kevin, on Flickr"> 15896087598_46d6ca655b_b. "1024" height="680" alt="Can we go out there?!"></a>

    F8 I think:

    <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/klweng/15896086478" title="2 dogs and a flare. by Kevin, on Flickr"> 15896086478_4c8d8ab6e4_b. "680" height="1024" alt="2 dogs and a flare."></a>

Impressions: Pretty sharp, at least sharp enough for me, but needs a contrast boost of some form at f2 and especially 1.4. Wide open is usable though. Very little CA especially at F2 and smaller. Beautiful Bokeh.

Here are some samples from mine:

Wide open, on an overcast day, and look! no veiling flare! I did had a hood on the lens at the time, but on normal light, you get haze hood or not.

Another wide open, with some haze:

Warning, dont sting yourself with the next one, stopped down to f5.6 is unbelievably sharp:
