I found myself browsing eBay and I just won a Minolta Auto-Rokkor PF 58mm f/1.4 lens attached to an SR-7 body.

If I'm not mistaken, this lens is probably from the 1950's-1960's so it's not as well coated as the other MD lenses. But I'm not entirely sure if this lens would work on my MD->NEX adapter.

This is what it looks like:

    !B3E(4!w!Wk~$(KGrHqMOKj0E)oHz+VzSBMk3JhTwSg~~_3.JPG

There's a little lever that I have no idea what it does. I'm not going to be entirely sad if this turns out to be a dud because it was only sold for $30usd :D

How does it compare to other 50mm that you owned/own.

And I will post those as soon as I get the lens turbo haha. I'm really excited for the lens turbo. Even though people do have a lot of complaints about it, its just a tool that I'd like to have in my arsenal.

i would say it is similar in performance to a canon 50 1.4
wide open performance is good, can be a bit hazy if the light hits it a certain way, i guess that is just something you get with older designs, because a lot of older glass does this (coatings probably have a lot to do with this, and shooting them on a crop sensor doesn't help either)
sharpness is good, bokeh not as nice as its more expensive brother, the 58 1.2 but not bad either.
i think the lens turbo will make the lens stand out more, as ive only shot this on a crop nex (ive shot the 58 1.2 on a canon 5d.)
i personally am really fond of the longer normal lenses - 58mm focal length much more then 50 on ff, i think this will be a great package with the lens turbo.

Glad to know it can still perform as well as a more "modern" lens haha.

I wish that the lens turbo would ship faster :[ It's going to be here in about 2-3weeks, but I can't wait any longer haha but oh well.

Any other lenses I should be on the look out for that could possibly perform well on an LT

I have the MC Rokkor PF 58/1.4, a later version of this lens. The Auto Minolta lenses were made before the MC's (which mean Meter Coupled). The lever on the side is for stopping down the aperture I believe, used in stop down metering. Here is an excellent source for all things Minolta. This particular page has a lot of good info on all the different Minolta lenses.

    http://www.rokkorfiles.com/Lens History.html

The main difference between the Auto and the MC version is the coating. Later Minolta lenses had very high quality coatings on them, some of the best in the industry. They were constantly changing and updating their coating formula and would start using a new coating as soon as it became available, even during mid production run of a lens. The older Auto lenses though had some of the more basic coatings that Minolta used and may even be single coated. Here is another very useful link with some detailed information and the entire Minolta lineup with detailed specs in an easy to read format.

    http://minolta.eazypix.de/lenses/index.html

I will post up some examples from my MC Rokkor PF 58/1.4. The bokeh of this lens can be quite special, with very painterly effects. It is not the sharpest wide open, not coming close at all the to the 55/1.7 or 50/1.7 Rokkors, but it is a very special lens to be sure. Oddly enough I shoot mine wide open all most all the time regardless of the sharpness. But then Im a wide open whore (hmmm, that doesnt sound good) and I shoot most of my photography that way, or close to it.

I just want to add that with lens turbo, sharpness and contrast will go up, bokeh will change some and overall feel of the lens changes. The inherent lens aberrations will be less evident. If anyone shot same lens on crop and ff will know what i am talking about.

I've had a Minolta 58/1.4 some time ago and returned it because it had a dent in the filter ring. Made some quick test shots though, you can find full-size jpegs here. I didn't think it was special so I never went after another one.

I'll have to look at that as soon as I save enough money for it. I love the 35mm range (cropped and FF) Also, I thought that with the LT sharpness and contrast will go down rather than up? I'll test it as soon as I receive my copy. By the way, just to clarify I'm getting the Zhongyi Lens Turbo, not the Metabones Speedbooster. (In fact I don't even know if MB makes an MD mount SB)

I love those sites, I use them all the time. But I thought that http://minolta.eazypix.de/lenses/index.html was unavailable for a while. I bookmarked that site a while back, but when I went to go check on the site like 2-3 days ago, it was a 404 error, so i thought the owners didn't renew their domain or something.

I love the look of that lens, the bokeh is very intriguing and it seems very good for portraits. Great pictures by the way :D

As much as I love Minolta lenses, the 35/1.8 is not one of their best. I'd try to find a reasonably priced Canon FD 35/2. I have one and it's very good.

Aw really? That's a little disappointing :/ I don't want to pay another $150 for an FD mount LT. I'll get the MD version none the less, even with it's short coming. Once I complete my collection of MD lenses (24mm, 35mm, 50mm, 135mm, and 35-70mm) I'll start collecting a second mount. Most likely FD due to my Canon upbringing haha.

Speaking of which: Does anyone here have a good 135mm lens they can recommend? I don't usually use that focal length, but I'd like to have it just incase. the JCP one I have is a decent performer, but I'd like one that is sharp wide open. The MD Celtic 135mm f/2.8 sounds like a good option, but since it's a celtic lens, I don't think that the coating would be as good as an Original MD lens

I have all Minolta MD 135/2.8 models and all of them are useable wide-open and excellent by f/4, sharp across the frame and hardly any purple fringing. I prefer the latest plain MD model because of its weight. I have had some Vivitar and Panagor 135/2.8 lenses and wasn't impressed by them.

Thanks, glad you liked the pics. :)

If you are interested in a 35mm I can HIGHLY recommend the Minolta MD 35/2.8. Its of the last line of Minolta manual focus lenses made and its a little plasticky, but the image quality from this little gem is amazing. At least my copy is, but I would imagine others to be similar. It has a nice short close focusing distance as well. Not macro, but very handy for controlling perspective. I always carry my Minolta Close Up lens No.2 when I shoot the MD 35/2.8 and they pair up nicely to give close to true macro. Anyway, here are some examples from my copy.

There are many more Minolta MD lenses that deliver very good results :D

I also have the MD 35 2.8 - haven't used it as much as I'd want but its a very good lens nevertheless ;)

Hey guys! Just got the lens today! Haha for $30 I am very happy! Ill post the samples from this morning, but I have some interesting pictures. I guess this lens is either, scratched or has a fungus infection. Maybe both haha but if so, is fungus going to damage my camera body? Here's what I'm talking about haha. If that's the case, I'll probably get this lens cleaned professionally haha
