Some shots (same places again on my lunchtime walk, sorry) on the Sony A7 with the Minolta 21mm f/2.8 MC W Rokkor-NL lens.
Most shot at F5.8 or F8 (I forget) -- a few shot wide open at F2.8.

Thanks for sharing the full-size pics, very helpful! I've looked into them, pixel-peeping to my heart's content :). I think my Olympus OM Zuiko 21/3.5 has better edge and corner sharpness, but this Minolta 21/2.8 looks better than my Minolta 20/2.8 which has some funky curvature of field characteristics. Center sharpness looks quite good and contrast seems OK too. I'm relieved that I don't have to buy this lens to get a better superwide for landscapes, it's generally quite pricey, around € 300 these days. It's also relatively big and heavy, especially compared to the tiny Olympus 21mm.

    Hi Ad,

I'm tempted to get some wide Olys.
I've got the 16mm Minolta -- that thing really distorts !

Frankly, I've never been really impressed with the performance of Minolta's wide-angle lenses when it comes to sharpness across the frame, which is important for me when I do landscapes. The plain MD 28/2 is alright, but not stellar; the rest of the 28mm lenses is OK but not great. The MD (Rokkor) 20/2.8 en Rokkor 24/2.8 are just about acceptable. The plain MD 24/2.8 looks quite good, not extremely sharp in the center but keeping its sharpness going to the corners; have to do more tests with that one. Only exception is the MD (Rokkor) 17/4, which is quite good.

I've got the Olympus 21/3.5, 24/2.8 and 28/3.5. All are excellent and better than their Minolta counterparts. The 24/2.8 and 28/3.5 are sharp at f/5.6, period. The 21/3.5 at f/8 is good enough in the corners and really nice in a large portion of the frame.

Personally I never took to fisheye lenses. I was demonstrated the Minolta 16mm in the eighties together with the 20mm. I didn't care for the 16mm's distorted view and I fell in love with the 20mm's perspective right there and then, shot a whole film within minutes.

    Hey Ad,

Yes, I never took to the 16mm fisheye ! (cost a fair bit too, and I got whacked with import duty for it).
The novelty factor of fisheyes wear off quite quickly.

Going slightly off topic, I must admit I like the Rokkor 24/2.8 on an APS-C sensor. I like the results with my Fuji X-Pro1 with that lens.

I'm looking forward to your reviews on the wide Olys on the A7.

    With Well Wishes,
