Maria Island is a stunningly tranquil Island off the East Coast of Tasmania. The wildlife is abundant and the ancient geography is amazing. There are fossil cliffs on the beach (featured in David Attenborough's Lonely Plant) and an amazing Dolerite ridge formed from volcanic eruption millions of years ago. It was a penal colony in the 1800's and accommodation is camping style in the old Penitentiary (now called Darlington settlement) - part of which is shown in the night sky shot.

All taken with the Sony A7R and the Sony Vario-Tessar T FE 16-35mm f/4 ZA OSS. For the Landscape shots I generally use the Cokin Z Pro system with either a HiTech 0.9 or 0.6 Soft Grad ND and a Cokin Pro CPL. Most are 3 shot HDR +- 1 EV - except for long exposures.

    Painted Cliffs - Lee Big Stopper 45 seconds @ F15, ISO 640, 18mm, manual whitebalance @ 10k Kelvin.

View from Bishop and Clerk: 3 shot pano (not HDR) - ISO 2500 (too tired to realise I hadn't changed this) 29mm, F8, 1/8000th

    The road to Darlington: ISO 50, 1/160, F8, 16mm

    The Commissionaire's Quarters: 1/4 @ F8, 21mm, ISO 50

    Welcome to Darlington: 1/4 @ F8, ISO 50, 21mm

Thanks Nick, Westoz, Dave and WoodWorks - very kind of you. I guess the place is just inspiring - hoping to go back there is another 1/2 of the Island we didn't even get to.

And thanks to the Forum for featuring this - much appreciated.

Good work, thanks for sharing. Just a correction on the Geology: dolomite is not formed from volcanic origin:)

Hi some comments from my side too. I think you have some very nice shots (I like that one a lot) but there a few that do not work for me (no you do not have to please me) but let me explain.
The first two beach shots (especially the first one) renders as fake to me.. I think you opened the shadows more that it was needed (where needed here is my interpretation what looks "normal")
In the first shot for example the brightness of the areas that are hidden by then sun are at the same brightness level of the places that are directly lit of the sun. Even if there was a reflector there you could not match the same brightness levels.
I am not a landscape shooter but if I was about to pick which I like I guess I would discard all those that look fake. I have no problem by hdr but I prefer the approaches where photo screams "fake".

    That is all for now
Feel free to disagree or agree that we disagree :p (the similar)
    Regards
    Alex
