So we have a family gathering tomorrow and as we have not all been togeather for about 6 years, we decided to do a few family pictures done by my sister-in-law, (other side of the family).

Well my sister-in-law has fallen ill and the responsibility has been given to me. I explained that I don't ever do group photography and am not good at staging large groups.

Luckily I have a tripod, and the remote app on my phone, but I don't have any lighting gear beyond my eternal mounted flash.

    Wish me luck.

Try to use natural light. Can you gather them outside?
But I think you and the a6000 will do fine. The external flash just has to be tall enough to clear the lens so as to not cast a shadow. It should be powerful enough since you can compensate with ISO.
And controlling the camera with your smartphone will surprise some of them. ;)

    Its outside, so no problem.

I'm just not used to having to direct more than one or two for a picture.

Consider asking one of the more outgoing, natural sort of leaders within the family group to be the "set-up coordinator" with you...let that person arrange the people for the shot...and you concentrate on the shot prep / execution itself

Don't forget, you can be unconventional. After a couple of standard poses, ask them to have some fun and be themselves for impulsive expressions.
Bet these will be the most memorable and smile inducing.

Thanks, I know just the person.

Hopefully we can have some fun.

I trust myself one on one. It is the large group, half adults, half kids that I have never done before.

I would avoid harsh sunlight it possible or you end up with something like this...
    DSC01437-X2.

An overcast day would be great but it's not like you can just dial that up. A nice shaded area would also work.

Thankfully, she was feeling better and showed up. :bravo-009:

I did act as second photographer and took some behind the scene shots.
