Is "In Body" or "Optical" Stabilization Better, Sony A7 and A7ii I use a Tamron Adaptall II 35-80mm and a Sony 28-70m to test if IBIS or OSS are better than the other.
I'm not sure what to gain from this comparison. So you're basically comparing 2-axis stabilization of the lens on the A7, versus 5-axis on the A7ii. Not surprising the 5-axis did better. If some of your movement with the A7 is something the lens can't handle, then it will definitely blur. It would be interesting to compare A7 vs A7ii with the same OSS lens. But should be same result.
If that's what you were trying to test, then you did fine. But it you were trying to test whether it is better to use a lens with OSS on an IBIS body versus a non-stabilized lens, then that test should be done differently. Try comparing the both lenses on the A7ii to test it that way.
I think what you could gain from this video, is do we really need OSS lenses when the IBIS is superior. I am planning to go out for a jaunt with the two lenses on the A7II to test how much difference hybrid stabilization makes. The problem is I only have one a7ii and I will have to do a lot of in the field lens changesI'm not sure what to gain from this comparison. My experience is that IBIS works well enough up to 85mm or so but for longer focal lengths the IBIS's movement range apparently is too small to cover for my camera shake, and I have a fairly steady hand. For instance, when I put a legacy 200mm on my A7R2, the viewfinder jumps up and down but the image is steady between jumps. Especially focussing in magnified view becomes difficult. I don't have such problems when I use the FE 4/70-200 with its OSS, the image is rock-steady even at 200mm.I think what you could gain from this video, is do we really need OSS lenses when the IBIS is superior.
I trust you are probably correct. I don't have a long focal length FF OSS to test that. I suppose I could shoot my 55-210 OSS aps-c on my A7 to see what happens but I am sure it is not as good as your ff eqivalent because mine is a budget lensMy experience is that IBIS works well enough up to 85mm or so but for longer focal lengths the IBIS's movement range apparently is too small to cover for my camera shake, and I have a fairly steady hand. My take on it is that IBIS is perfectly fine for 50mm or shorter but that there's a tipping point around 85mm. For anything 135mm or longer I'd definitely want it to have OSS and I'm happy that Sony equips lenses like the 4/24-105 with it. On the other hand I'm not happy with the OSS in shorter lenses because sideways moving lens elements can detract from image quality. I often switch off Steadyshot for the FE 4/16-35 because one of the sides can get unsharp and there isn't an option to enable IBIS but switch off OSS. Same for the FE 4/24-70 although the effect is smaller.
I don't really question IBIS' effectiveness of combatting camera shake for longer lenses but more the practicality when viewing and especially with manual focussing. My (very limited) experience with actual output was good, even a 500mm mirror lens gave me good output at shutter speeds around 1/125 s.I trust you are probably correct.
