Has anyone noticed any kind of national trends where it's a compliment to be asked to take someone's photo or where the general response is positive?

And also vice versa where asking someone if you can take their photo might offend?

I guess the rise of the camera phones, phablets and tablets made a very negative image on all photographers. It's just that you can no longer discern between real artists and the crowd of weird guys with cameras.

I like how Eric Kim handled this once. He took the photo of a woman while she walked by. When she noticed he took her image, she asked him why. What he answered? 'Because you're beautiful'. Yep, I think she took this as a compliment.

People in China are kind of immune to it. Everybody takes photos all the time. As the only foreigner in my area, every I look there's a camera phone pointed at me. I only ever pick my nose at home.

It's a good question and a difficult one to answer. I'm English and I currently live in New Zealand. Here in NZ, people seem pretty cool about being 'in' your photos and are very approachable if you actually want to ask them if it's OK for them to be in the shot. They also offer to take a shot for you if you are part of a group which is nice ! In England, people are very guarded as a whole - most people define a 'photographer' as a paedophile, a pervert ( same thing ), a terrorist or a nutter ( ie psycho ) so I generally avoided taking images of people in England just to avoid any unpleasantness. Also, if anyone there offerec to take a group picture for you, they would likely run off with your camera. I probably just sound a bit jaded, but I lived in England for 42 years so I do have some experience.

So true - in the rest of Europe it's almost as bad as in England. Never heard somebody running off with a camera when asked to take a group picture though.
