I'm beginning to spot the spirit of Christmas shining through the darkness on my morning drives for work. Here is one display I spotted as I exited the highway the other day...

We have Thanksgiving decorations out. I refuse to like anything in here for another week.
Thanksgiving counts. You can post your turkey pics here. Think Macy's Parade when Santa makes his entry. I consider Thanksgiving to be the kickoff of the holiday season. It ain't the holidays unless the Lions are losing on Thanksgiving day!

IMHO it is waaaay too early for Christmas stuff -- sheesh! Someone in the neighborhood next to my own neighborhood has a bunch of junky looking life-size Santa and reindeer "decorations" on their front lawn, which looks absolutely tacky. They had put them out there over a week ago -- and we haven't even had Thanksgiving yet.

I read in The Washington Post where a family hired someone to put up their Christmas lights, and that was done in early November, right after Hallowe'en. The family happily turned on the lights to enjoy them that first night and the next night.....and then the neighborhood's HOA (homeowners' association) got after them because this was in violation of the HOA rules and regulations, which dictate that Christmas decorations may be up only between certain dates.

The family offered to simply not turn on the lights until the official appointed time, but the HOA was refusing to go along with that and was insisting that the lights all be taken down. They also were planning to slap a fine on the family as well. To me that is a little OTT. Letting the family leave the lights in place since they were already there anyway and just not lighting them yet seems reasonable to me.

I do get irritated by the crass commercialism which seems to have overtaken the entire Christmas season, and the earlier and earlier pushing of merchandise. Even "Black Friday," which traditionally has been just one day, the day after Thanksgiving, has now apparently artificially morphed into a week or more, with various retailers jumping on the bandwagon.
