I'm constantly impressed by the high ISO/low noise capabilities of new cameras nowadays. I still remember a time of having a clean ISO 1600 in a DSLR was a big deal. Now we are pushing 6 digits in ISO figures! Let's see some cool shots done in very low light and on very high ISO.

Shot this beach proposal half an hour after sunset. Clients were stuck in traffic, but we still managed some great shots. This one's done at ISO 12,800. A little bit of film grain adds character am I right? :D

    Here's a couple.

ISO 6,400 with the NEX-7 ( notorious for high ISO noise ). Also cropped about 20% each.

Not bad guys. It is neat to be able to use such high ISO's.

I learned high ISO works good as long as you earn enough light for your picture. It will get worth if you try to lighten such dark images to lighten up by software.

6,400 is really the limit for the NEX-7. It can shoot at 12,800 but those shots are barely usable.

The strength of the camera is 800 ISO and down.

The A7 shot above at 12,800 is amazing and some of the images I've seen from the A7s at high ISO are mind boggling.

Your 6,400 shots are still totally usable in my opinion. And 6,400 is still really impressive for a crop sensor. It just shows how far sensor tech has come during the last few years. It looks similar or even cleaner than 6,400 on a Canon 5D2.

I have no qualms letting the ISO spike up for the majority of my shots now. It's so liberating!

Totally agree with that for the Nex-6 too. I try not to use anything over 800 myself and really, 1600 is as high as I'd go.
On the other hand, the high ISO/low noise of the Full Frames is amazing!!!

Exactely. As we have the same sensor on the NEX5T, I also limit myself to 800 ISO maximum. 1600 is useable for a personnal use I think, but that's it.
That's why I definitely want to upgrade to the A7, for its low light performance but also for its dynamic range. It's amazing at recovering dark tones. You almost don't need to do HDR pictures, if you use LR, you have an HDR picture in only one frame! Unless you want extreme HDR effect but that's different.

I was wrong. The NEX 7 can shoot up to ISO 16000. I found some from last year I took at that level. I shot these in RAW and as you can see, used very little NR. I preferred the gritty look.

While not super clean, the high ISO allowed me to shoot at the right shutter speed to capture some pretty cool action.

    ISO 16000, f/7.1, 1/640/sec @140mm.

    25600 iso

This is way past the real limits of the NEX-6 but for a smaller size post, is decent. :D

    25600 iso

One last example from me. JPG vs DXO. I normally wont post this at more than 1080p but this one I left at 1440p so you can examine closer.
It was very dark so the camera was seeing a LOT more than my eyes could...the type of test I wanted.

Not perfect by any means but with FD 50mm 1.4 and NEX-6 at 25,600 ISO I am just happy that it keeps the cereal box details pretty nicely for APS-C. :)
