I want to complete my little prime lens collection with a portrait lens for the Sony A7. I'm taking two things into consideration: (1) I'm leaning towards AF at this focal length, but MF may suffice; and (2) cost of the adapter.

These are my contenders. I have a write up of each lens (with its pros and cons) here and you can also take a poll there.

    Leica 90mm f/2 @ $450 for a B- quality used MF lens?
    Zeiss Contax G 90mm f/2.8 @ $525 for AF lens + AF adapter?
Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM @ $400 for AF lens + AF adapter?
    Canon FD 85mm f/1.2 L @ $800 for MF lens?
Pentax SMC FA 77mm f/1.8 Limited @ $650 for AF lens (in MF only)?
    Minolta MAXXUM 85mm f/1.4 @ $1000 for AF lens + AF adapter?
    Samyang 85mm f/1.4 Aspherical @ $300 for MF lens?
    Other (Please specify in comments)

Full Frame? 2-3 steps back from your normal portrait distance and go with Pentax K135 f 2.5!!! I'm loving this FL lately.

It's a lovely lens but it is quite expensive though if you add the cost of the LAEA4 AF adapter. ($700+300)

Interesting, is it a Super Takumar lens? Any sample shots?

There's no reason why you should pay $800 for a Canon FD 85mm f/1.2L. I have two. I paid $650 for one and $725 for the other. They're both in perfect condition.

Good to know! eBay's average prices are such poor reflections of fair market value, and that was my only reference.

Here's sort of how it works. There are a lot of super nice lenses that people quite willingly spend $800 to $900 for on Ebay via Buy it Now listings. And on a rare occasion, auctions go that high, but for many of these lenses, the auctions go for lower prices than the Buy it Now ones. Basically, for this sorts of lenses, if buyers are smart, they'll wait for an auction, but if sellers are smart, they'll put the lens up as a Buy it Now.

    Case in point:

I just watched a couple weeks ago, a Buy it Now for a Nikon 200mm f/2 AI-S go for $1500. Two or three months before that, I watched the exact same lens go for $900 in an auction.

Right. The other prices i've listed above are all on the "low end" of the ebay auction prices. But I suppose it depends on how often you check eBay and keep track of the prices (i.e. I wasn't looking at a FD 85mm 1.2L until recently).

Is there a website that track the auction prices? That would be very handy.

    Hence the dream ;)

But I am thinking the LEA4 is a worthwhile investment with the whole work of A-Mount lenses it opens up. None the less, the 85 is quite a cost, however per the comment on my dream post, I am yet to find anything which is AF in this focal length that really excites me.

Agreed. Hopefully sony comes out with a native AF FE mount lens at around 85mm soon.... Or a Sigma Art lens

Ebay itself has a fairly decent feature set for following searches--a new development. That's what I use.

Mike, any sample photos from the 85mm f/1.2? How do you like that lens?

I love the lens...part of the reasons why I have two. Here's a small set on Flickr from the lens:

These photos are from a few cameras: a Olympus OM-D E-M5, Canon 5D, and Sony A7.

I havent used any of the lenses above so I dont feel confident actually throwing out a vote on one of them. I would recommend a Yashica ML 85mm but unfortunately there is no such animal. Yashica didnt make that focal length, probably due to having two very good zeiss lenses in the CY lineup. It is worth checking out the Contax Zeiss 85/2.8 Sonnar or the 85/1.4 Planar, both in CY mount. The 1.4 seems to fit in your budget well and it is supposed to be a very good lens with typical zeiss renderings.

    Some other possibilities...

Helios 40-2 85/1.4 M42 mount- Russian made Zeiss copy, find a good one and its a keeper
Tair 11a- Bokeh monster with 20 aperture blades
    Leica R Summilux 85/1.4- Hey, its a Leica :)

How much does the Tair 11a usually go for? It seems their prices have really gone up, I can almost get a Leica 135mm f2.8 for the same price.

Where are you finding the Leica 90mm f/2 for that price?
