I run Ubuntu Linux on my home PC, and right now I use fotoxx and shotwell for image processing. I haven't figured out yet if fotoxx will remove spots caused by dust, like my attached photo (center left and upper middle). Is it worth installing GIMP for such PP tasks? I have played with GIMP sparingly under Win XP, but haven't tried it under Linux.

Photoscape has a nice tool for that.

Sure. Learning to use GIMP is going to take a long time. Don't assume anything with it, check from manual or tutorials if things don't seem to work.

    I like the GIMP.

Just remember that if you open a 12-16 bit TIFF, it will get trimmed to 8 bits in GIMP. JPEGs, of course, are fine.

Thanks for the replies. I'll look into Photoscape, Dave.

    Acceptable first attempt . . .

. . . after a few hours of working with GIMP. I can live with these. I'm still going to thoroughly clean the sensor plate as soon as my camera cleaning kit arrives.
