From reading some reviews after I grabbed it, finding one on an old Zenit body seems to be cheaper, at least in Europe.

Lens-on-body can be cheaper this side of the pond, too, even if the camera is working. I think sometimes people inherit or otherwise passively acquire a camera/lens and don't realize the lens is worth more by itself.

I got my Nikkor 50 f1.2 that way. I was the first guy to respond to the ad that said he wanted the camera and lens. Got an FM2 that worked in the deal, all for $100. Couldn't beat that.

Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 Art EF mount w/ an MC-11 adapter on my A7Rii. Useable in full frame format at 35mm, heavy mechanical vignetting at shorter focal lengths. Works great in Super 35 mode.

On Thursday night I spent a few hours playing with different macro options at a friends studio. Using Macro lenses, extension tubes, bellows, diopters, reversed & stacked lenses (including some unusual adapted lenses) or combinations of these. I think we covered most options, both on my A7ii and my friend's Nikon DSLRs.
Some of the crazier options we tried were using a £1 magnifying glass as a diopter (not as good as a Raynox but no worse than some of the cheaper 'close-up filters') & combining a Paragon 500mm mirror lens, extension tubes (more than 1 set) a macro focusing teleconverter & full stretch of the double extension bellows to get near to 1:1 from about 2m from the subject.

Better results were of course achieved with less radical combinations this was with a Raynox DCR150 on my Cosina 100mm macro:

I'm also rather pleased with the results of my microscope objective (mounted via extended bellows) which manged this shot handheld (the 75 shown is about 3mm across so it's of the order of 10x lifesize):

Not quite square on to the subject but at these magnifications DOF is near zero - so much better than I expected.

Boring pictures with a boring lens.....

Adapted a Canon USM 100-300mm f4.5-5.6 via the MC-11 adapter. Had it kicking around from when I had a Rebel (and got it for $50 on eBay then), and had lent it to a friend for a while. Recently picked up the MC-11 for work, and figured I'd try this cheap, unremarkable and forgotten tele zoom on the demanding A7Rii sensor. It was....less bad than I thought!

And now, for the boring test shots.

First, the out of camera jpegs (300mm @ f8):

Hmm....sharper than I actually expected for the very end of the zoom range, even if I am shooting at what should be the optimal f-stop.

Pulled the raw files into LR and applied my typical baseline edit (add clarity, texture, medium contrast curve, drop highlights and boost shadows, LR auto corrections on color), and:

Well, I think this might be worth exploring a little more. Perhaps this lens could have a use for some low-expectation, long reach happy snaps! The out of focus areas are pretty smooth, too.

As for autofocus, it will run in AF-C and AF-S. Hunts a LOT on small flexible spot, but acquires focus pretty quick in wide mode, and stays with the subject pretty well. Frankly, it isn't much different in its focus aquisition in AF-C and wide than my FE 50mm 1.8, but it can't use the lock-on AF, or Eye-AF. Face detection works.

Anyone else using this thing?
