Focus hold button/s on some lenses.
I am not sure I am missing something here but if you use back button focusing is not letting go also focus hold ?
I can see the point if you use the shutter button to focus and I see the focus hold can via the menu be set to other functions , eye AF or drive mode look like good ideas.

Is there some other benefit to focus hold on the lens that I am not understanding?

I think it's pretty critcal for shooting zooms/Tele where objects in the foreground can get in the way and cause the lens to go 'hunt' unnecessarily. At least that's what I've used it for

I reprogrammed by 70-200 for eye focus. Just seemed like a handy place for it.
