Currently doing a little Film Noir for an A-level art project, we were given the title 'Covert and obscure' so I figured why not! I've got a couple of decent shots so far, I'd just like any criticism from you guys, especially on my lighting. I really love the Noir style (I'm even working on a film project) so I'd really like to perfect the lighting and such here. So, without further ado...

I wasn't really sure whether these images are almost too dark? I'm trying to create really hard shadows but I don't have any point lights, so the light spreads out perhaps a little too much. Anyway, see what you think.

Good concept but definitely too dark, I can't even make up what the second and third are ?!

    Cheers for the feedback :)
Looking at it now I realise it's very dark, sometimes it's good to look upon it with fresh eyes, as it were. I went back into LightRoom and toned down my overzealous use of blacks and contrast, and this is what I've got now:

Oh, and the object in those images is a revolver pistol, just thought it suited the theme. Are those still too dark? I've just tried to maintain the contrast, which is the most important part of the image in this style.

Much better. Still would like it a bit brighter, but good.

Not my photo (came across it while browsing Flickr for photos with the Nex and 16mm) but I really like this photo even though I am not sure why (!) - quite a few of the comments say it is 'very cinematic' or has a film noir feeling: Discretions | Flickr - Photo Sharing!

No new shots as of yet but here's a few edits from Photoshop, I tried to get that comic Noir 'Sin city' style:

Random self-portrait I took whilst messing with on-board effects, with a little further tweaking in Lightroom:
