Indeed. Incredible it took them so long, but at least it is finally on its way.

Great news indeed!!! Didn't see that coming!

Looking forward seeing how the 50mm performs compared with the Zeiss 55mm

Both look to be great assets to the line-up

I'm switching fully to Sony. These were the lenses I was waiting for!

This is great news for the E-mount system! Finally a "nifty fifty" for FE that fits the usual "definition" of that term, fast and cheap.

And a telephoto zoom reaching out to 300mm to boot!

Two things I've been hoping for. [emoji2]

Comparison with the 55mm f/1.8, it looks like the new 50mm is comparable in the center widen open at 10 lppm, but has a lot more astigmatism as you move away from the center of the image. The contrast of high frequency detail (resolution) is a little lower with the 50's listed 30 lppm being about the same in the center as the 55's 40 lppm. Still, being that close to 80% is quite good, but again, less consistent across the frame.

Even at f/8, the new 50 isn't competing with the significantly more expensive 55mm, but it looks like it'll be a respectable lens compared to Nikon and Canon's nifty fifty options. It'll be a good lens, but not a great lens--just like it should be.

    Well done Sony.

    The new 50mm:

The sample photos from the FE 50 1.8 show a lot of promise. Looks sharp enough at 1.8 and the bokeh from the photos on the Sony site are pleasant.

btw, that RX10iii looks freaking amazing.

    24-600mm f/2.4-f/4.

I can't seem to find the info on the aperture to focal length specs.

im loving the additions to the FE - mount lineup. Really still dreaming of an updated 200mm 2.8 prime! It's not like sony doesn't own all the patents form Minolta.

... and it'll be a 75mm/1.8 (kinda) on the A6000/6300! Also not bad!

Really great to see these two lenses. Both fill a gap in the lens lineup. In fact, if we're honest, we have to say Sony is really pumping the lenses out!

    I wonder when we'll get a $500 or less 24mm? (I know, I know - some people are never happy ;))

FINALLY!!! I love compact 2-way lenses (FF and crop). I may have to buy back into FF now. Some of my fav pics are on my former 5D classic + 50/1.8.

Looks like it will do okay vs. the APS-C 50mm f/1.8, too--nearly as good but not quite.

This is great news and seemingly a complete surprise. Just when I thought Sony was abandoning normal folk in FF e mount. $3000+ 2.8 zooms are not for this hobby shooter. Now if they can surprise me with a reasonably priced 24mm as well :). With my Voigtlander 15mm, Zeiss 35, the 50 1.8 add a 24 and thats all I need.

I told you 28/2 is just a beginning of this segment. Next is 85/1.8 or maybe 100/2.

Looking forward to 85. This is what I had on my D700, favorite cheap trio, 35/2, 50/1.8, 85/1.8. Can't wait close the same trio on A7ii (28/50/85). Next step could be A7Rii and as I far as I am concerned, this may last next 8 years, how long my Nikon lasted. I will get 50 in summer when I visit Russia, they have much more competitive prices for Sony then BH or Adorama in USA.
